Course info
Atmospheric, Oceanic and Climate science is one of the most challenging of physical sciences attracting the best students from science degrees. Our PhD Programme is a key component of the research within the Department of Meteorology. As many of our research students have little prior knowledge in atmospheric or oceanic sciences, the first two terms are normally partly occupied by taking a selection of our MSc/Diploma lecture courses. Research students work closely together with their supervisors and each student also has a monitoring committee to monitor overall progress. Research students take a full part in the academic life of the Department including participation in seminars, current weather discussion, etc. There may also be opportunities to assist as a paid demonstrator in our teaching programme. Most research students attend at least one summer school and one conference in their field, or a related one, during the 3 year period. The Department is able to offer projects in the full range of atmospheric, oceanic and climate science from the global and climate scale down through the scale of individual weather events (cyclones and fronts) to the scale of urban areas and individual clouds. Current staff interests include the global circulations, the middle atmosphere, planetary atmospheres, the general circulation of the oceans, radiative transfer and the radiative forcing of climate change, predictability of tropical climate and monsoons, mechanisms of long-term climate change, statistical analysis of short-term climate change, climate impact of interactions between ocean and atmosphere, research into computational methods for fluid dynamics, satellite estimates of rainfall in the tropics, mesoscale dynamics and predictability, radar and lidar observations of rain and clouds from the ground and from space, urban meteorology, ion-aerosol-cloud microphysics and atmospheric electricity, observations and dynamics of storms, and modelling convective systems.
