Research carried out by staff in the Department covers many aspects of Western art and architecture and theories of art and architecture from the Renaissance through to the present day. Individual members of staff have particular expertise in the following areas: David and French Art in the Period of the French Revolution; Seventeenth-Century French Classicism and Goya; Fifteenth-Century Florence, Venice and Italian Renaissance Art; European Sculpture Fifteenth to Nineteenth Century; French and English Architecture Twelfth to Sixteenth Century; Stained Glass in England and France; Italian Renaissance Architecture and Architectural Theory; Architecture in Venice and the Veneto; Church Planning in Italy in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries; Late Nineteenth - and Twentieth-Century British Art with a Particular Interest in the Reception of Modern European Art in the 1880s (Impressionism); the 1910s (Post-Impressionism) and the 1930s (Surrealism); The Work and Writings of Walter Sickert; Sixteenth - and Seventeenth-Century Italian Art; Artistic Patronage in Rome and Italy in the Sixteenth Century; The Circle of Annibale Carracci; Italian Renaissance and Baroque Drawing; Twentieth-Century British Art and Contemporary Art; War Art and Public Monuments; Feminism in the Visual Arts; Museums; Modern and Contemporary Art, Art Theory, Museums and Galleries, East European Art.

How much will it cost?
2007 fees - £3,240 FT; £1,782 PT; £1,620 working away (FT); £891 working away (PT). The University offers a limited number of studentships, as do the Research Councils.

Entry Requirements
Applicants will usually require a good undergraduate degree and an MA/MSc in a related area. A proposal of approx 300 words on your chosen topic is also required. It is recommended that you contact the department informally to discuss your application before applying.
